Rio Ferdinand was very impressed as he highlighted how Chelsea showcased their squad depth in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup win over Villarreal.

The Blues had to work for their win, but Kepa Arrizabalaga’s heroic saves in the penalty shoot-out were enough to secure their first Super Cup title since 1998.

For this game, Thomas Tuchel surprisingly did not make any changes from the line-up he used in the friendly win over Tottenham Hotspur last week.

The likes of Jorginho, Mason mount, and Andreas Christensen who arrived late for the pre-season due to their involvement at the Euro 2020 still featured later in the game, but all started from the bench.

In total, Tuchel made six substitutions throughout the game, including the important decision to replace Edouard Mendy with Arrizabalaga in the extra time.

Despite the personnel changes, Ferdinand insisted he did not notice any significant drop in terms of quality from this Chelsea side

“It points towards the depth of the squad they’ve got,” the former Manchester United defender told BT Sport after the game (via BBC Sport).

“Them [Chelsea] and Manchester City have such an array of talent in all areas.

“They can take people out and the levels don’t drop. Everyone else, there are players, [but] the level drops.”
